AKD Sound Mod v1.2

AKD Sound Mod v1.2 replaces most of the battle and vehicle sound effects in the game and adds additional variations to a number of these.  The “ZBase_AKDSM.brz” includes universal sounds like hits, zips, etc. and “near” shots and explosions for nose to the ground play.  “ZModule” and “ZXtra” files can be added to further tailor the mod to different perspecitves/scenarios.  Replacements and additions include:

  • All explosions
  • All small arms and vehicle armament firing sounds
  • Fixed wing cannon firing sounds and air missile and rocket firing sounds
  • All bullet impact sounds, most penetration sounds
  • Bullet “zips” are now “snaps”
  • Optional new vehicle sounds
  • Optional modules for “far” sounds for explosions, shots, and structure collapse.
  • Extras for special circumstances, e.g. movie making or CM Afghanistan.
  • And several other additions, replacements and improvements.

Installation

Version 1.2 is packed in .brz files for improved modularity. If you were previously using an older version of my sound mod, go to \Combat Mission Shock Force\Data\Z and delete the “Z_AKD Sound Mod” folder.  The mod now supports CMSF + all modules and CM Afghanistan.  No previous versions or patches are needed.  Remove them all.

Once you have deleted all previous AKDSM files, installation is as simple as first adding “ZBase_AKDSM.brz” to your “Data” or “Data\Z” folder in your root CMSF or CMA directory, then adding “ZModule” .brz files to customize the mod to your liking.  ZXtra files are for particular uses and will not be appropiate for all situations.  A detailed explanation of each file can be found in the readme.

*A note on CM mod file structure: the .brz files are added to the game in alphanumeric order, i.e. the individual sound files packed in ZXtra .brz files supercede ZModule and ZBase, and the sounds in ZModule files will supercede those in ZBase.  If you want the sounds from another sound mod to be used over AKDSM, simply add the prefix “ZZ” to the file/folder.  For example, if you want to use Ryujin’s HD sound mod over any combination of AKDSM .brz files, simply change the name of the mod folder “HD Sound v0.XX” to “ZZ_HD Sound v0.XX” and place in the same folder as the AKDSM .brz files.  If you want to further customize AKDSM, unpack the .brz files using the tools located in the “Mod Tools” folder in your root CM directory.

These sounds/modified sounds come from so many sources I have lost track, but special thanks are due to CM community members oddball and Nemboo for several of the sounds used here. Absolutely no reuse for any commercial purpose.

ZBase_AKDSM.brz – contains universal sounds like bullets hits, etc. and shots and explosions with a “close” feel.

ZModule_farsmallarms.brz – small arms firing effects are given a more distant feel.

ZModule_farcannon.brz – vehicle cannon firing effects are given a more distant feel.

ZModule_farexplosions.brz – explosions have more distance and “pop.”

ZModule_vehicle.brz – new sounds for most vehicle movement, idling and shut down.

ZModule_collapse.brz – new collapse sounds are given a more distant, rumbling feel.  No more hearing individual pebbles falling across the map.

ZXtra_CMA.brz – after setting up the above to your liking in CMA, add this for more appropiate Shilka and PPSh firing sounds.  This will also change the pistol firing sound, so you will hear a “double-tap”.  This must be weighed against the greater prevalence of the PPSh.

ZXtra_Artillery.brz – different artillery sounds, but because CMSF randomly selects up and down amongst the artillery sound files, these will not be appropiate in many situations (For example, 120mm mortars will sometimes use the sound file also shared by 155mm artillery and somtimes the file used by 81mm mortars.  AFAIK, only works with any consistency for 155mm artillery and 60mm mortars.

ZXtra_Leo2loud.brz – the game is currently playing the Leopard 2 sounds somewhat quieter than the others.  This can be used temporarily in addition to ZModule_vehicle to address this issue until the problem is patched.  If the issue is corrected by BFC, the Leopard 2 sounds in ZModule_vehicle will work fine and this ZXtra can be removed.

ZXtra_A10_GAU8_hit.brz – changes the smallest explosion sound to one appropiate for high-RPM cannon, like the A-10 GAU-8.  Will also modify and make inappropriate all 25-40mm cannon/GMG impacts and Russian and German hand grenades.

ZXtra_VeryFarRed.brz – very distant sounds for red force (Syrian) small arms.

ZXtra_VeryFarBlue.brz – very distant sounds for blue force (US/Nato) small arms.
