I was honestly a bit annoyed by CM’s rendition of the Germans firing their LMG’s with one hand on the barrel, so I saw that US soldiers in the modern games seemed to hold the M240 closer to what a German GPMG should be.

So I swapped some files and voilà.

Install it by unzipping it into the Z folder inside your data folder. Create it if you don’t have one.

It should work for all CM2 games.

The mod is probably not compatible with vehicle and uniform texture mods from other authors. For the longer version about the mods continue reading.

The pictures above illustrate the reason I decided to create these. The game uses the same textures for some soldiers/vehicles no matter the formation (or sub-formation) they belong to. And so the markings on a soldier/vehicle tend to not match with what your unit information panel states. Should you have some knowledge about the manner in which the British Army marked their vehicles and uniforms then you probably have noticed other similar conflicts with them also.

Seeing my gunners and sappers appearing the same as the infantry annoyed me. But I was otherwise content with the stock uniform/vehicle textures. The only practical solution seemed to be to remove any such identifying markings from the textures. So that’s what I did. Now with this mod it is just the names given in the unit information panel that try to depict whom your soldiers/vehicles are, and nothing in the 3D view should contradict that.

  • War Department Numbers Have Not Been Added Or Removed

Notice any units continuing to show markings that can identify them as an particular formation then let me know what I missed.

It uses the sound files from the old Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (and its expansions). It may not be the most realistic sound for the M1, but I find it to be cinematic and nostalgic. The mod works for all CM games featuring the M1 (CMBN, CMFB, CMFI and modules)

How to install:

Simply unzip the folder into your Z folder in your combat mission directory. If you have a master sound mod, you can add a z to the name of the M1 folder to force the game to load it over the other Garand sounds. (Rename the folder from ‘M1 Garand Sound Mod’ to ‘zM1 Garand Sound Mod’)

(These mods were packaged in parts due to upload limits in BFC’s Repository.)

This uniform mod includes all the US divisions in Sicily and early Italy through through about the time of the Anzio battles. I haven’t gotten to the later divisions: 85th, 88th, 91st, 92nd and 10th Mountain.

Uniforms were shaded/saturated/de-saturated etc., to get a little more variety. They are great out of the box, but I just don’t like too much uniformity in uniforms!

There are several helmet mixes too.

Not all the uniforms have patches. That makes for more variety and reflects new replacements, worn uniforms, etc. I did not bother to dirty-up the uniforms. Maybe some other time.

After downloading, pick the division folder you want, copy, and put it in the “Combat Mission/Fortress Italy/User Data” folder where you put all your other mods.

Armor, Paratroopers, and infantry (Rangers/regular infantry/glider infantry) all use separate uniform textures and maps, so you can one of each type in the mod folder at the same time.

Much thanks to good ‘ol Mord for his critique and general inspiration and LongLeftFlank for his PTO Mod and letting me use his Asian Faces for the Nisei units.

Go inside the Data folder and create a new folder ( if you haven’t yet) called “Z”. Because “Z” comes after the names of the standard game files (“Version XXX”) you are guaranteed that any mods you put into the “Z” folder will be loaded and used by Combat Mission.

Unzip and Drop “Aris US Weathered Faces” if you want just a dirt look or “Aris US Weathered and Wounded Faces” if you prefer your soldiers to have battle wounds, scars, stitches, etc… (and dirt, of course 😉 ).
